About the event
This very varied walk takes in 2 hills, a Church, Heathlands, woodlands, ponds, with some outstanding views of Surrey's countryside.
Walk length: 16-17 miles (25km)
Allow about 6 hours
Pace: Brisk-Fast
The walk includes two remarkable stretches of heathland with fine views. The going is reasonably easy, except for one steep descent and a brief very steep ascent (requiring a good level of fitness) up the escarpment of the North Downs. Good walking boots are essential if the weather has been wet because the two steeper sections and the North Downs Way can be slippery.
We set off from Epsom Downs and head to the Mere Pond in Walton-on-the-Hill, from there we proceed to the tip of Headley. Headley was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 as "Hallega" meaning a clearing in the heather. We then visit Headley Church, go through a plethora of small countryside lanes and fields
We cross Headley Heath and then proceed to the back of Reigate Hill, Mogador and then make our way back to Walton and finally to Epsom Downs.
